The 2026 Formula 1 World Championship arrives at the Circuit of the Americas for Round 18, opening the decisive final six-race stretch of the season. For Kimi Antonelli it is the first mathematical chance to clinch the Drivers’ crown. For Ferrari it is the launch venue for the biggest in-season upgrade package anyone has brought this year. For McLaren it is a 7-point rearguard against a resurgent Max Verstappen. For the entire paddock, Austin is the last proper proving ground before everyone pivots full-time toward the 2027 regulations.
Where the standings sit before Austin
Antonelli heads to Texas on 340 points with eight race wins. George Russell is second on 238. Lewis Hamilton sits third on 229. Max Verstappen fourth on 221. Charles Leclerc fifth on 215. Lando Norris rounds out the top six on 201. That is a 139-point spread across the six title-contender rows and a 102-point gap at the very top.
Mercedes sit on 578 constructor points, 134 clear of Ferrari and 239 clear of McLaren. The real intrigue in the team standings is the duel for third: Red Bull on 332 are now just 7 points off McLaren’s 339, a gap that was in triple digits before Verstappen’s Sepang-Singapore sweep.
Antonelli’s first title match point
Antonelli can seal the 2026 Drivers’ Championship in Austin, but the maths is tight. Austin is a conventional one-race weekend in 2026, not a Sprint round, and the FIA removed the fastest-lap bonus point from the start of 2025. The absolute maximum any driver can take from Texas is 25 points. After Austin, five rounds remain on the calendar (Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi), worth 125 further points. Antonelli therefore needs his lead over every rival to be strictly greater than 125 points when the chequered flag drops at the Circuit of the Americas.
Per the official permutation published by Sky Sports, the title is sealed in Texas if Antonelli wins the Austin Grand Prix and George Russell finishes P9 or lower (two points or fewer) and Lewis Hamilton finishes P5 or lower (ten points or fewer). In that configuration Antonelli walks away from Austin with a 125-point lead and nine race wins to Russell’s maximum possible eight, which locks the countback and ends the title fight five rounds early. Max Verstappen needs only to not win in Austin and Charles Leclerc the same.
The full story of how the 102-point cushion got built is in our Road to Champion feature, which breaks down every one of the 17 rounds that put Antonelli within one race of becoming the youngest Formula 1 champion in history.
The circuit: 5.513 km of chassis, bumps and heat
The Austin layout is an uncompromising test of aerodynamic and mechanical architecture. Three sectors, three very different challenges.

The surface itself is COTA’s quiet differentiator. Built over fluctuating Texan clay, the tarmac has shifted year on year and the sharp vertical ridges that develop expose any peaky aerodynamic platform. For contemporary ground-effect cars that live on millimetre-precise floor clearances, those bumps are the single biggest predictor of weekend-long balance. Teams that nail the ride-height compromise on Friday tend to carry the pace all the way to Sunday.
Ferrari ship their biggest 2026 upgrade
Austin is the launch venue for Ferrari’s fourth and final major package of the SF26’s life. Italian paddock reporting from AutoRacer and La Gazzetta dello Sport puts the component count above anything else introduced on the SF26 this year, bigger than the Mercedes upgrade that landed at Sepang. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will run the full specification across every practice session.

What is in the Austin package
The headline item is an all-new floor with completely redesigned venturi tunnels, aimed at widening the operating window rather than chasing peak theoretical downforce. The brief is to produce stable aerodynamic load across changing ride heights and wind yaw angles, exactly the problem that caught the SF26 out at Singapore when it was fast on mediums and nowhere on softs.
The chassis changes extend outward from there. Narrower sidepod inlets open up airflow around the car’s outer flanks toward the floor edge and diffuser. Reconfigured cooling louvres hold the engine temperature line despite the reduced inlet area. Reworked diffuser extremities and gurney tabs expand the expansion area in synergy with the new underfloor. Flow conditioners on the front suspension fairings and subtle front wing details tie the whole flow structure together.
The package was originally scheduled for Zandvoort but was held back when early correlation between the wind tunnel, CFD and track sensors showed inconsistencies. Ferrari shipped 75 percent at the Dutch round, held the remaining 25 percent for refinement and arrived in Texas with the full suite. Factory estimates target three to four tenths of a second per lap. The power unit deficit relative to Mercedes and Red Bull remains, but Ferrari believes the chassis step is enough to make the SF26 a genuine podium car in the final five races and, critically, to validate the simulation tools that are about to be pointed at Project 679, the 2027 Ferrari.
“Austin is also a correlation litmus test. If the physical car replicates the lift-to-drag numbers predicted by the wind tunnel, the 2027 baseline designs can be executed with confidence. If correlation fails, design doubts persist all winter.”
Paraphrased from Ferrari technical briefing notes ahead of the Austin weekend
Red Bull vs McLaren for third
At the Singapore chequered flag, McLaren’s 100-point cushion over Red Bull in the Constructors’ had shrunk to 7. Max Verstappen swept Marina Bay for 33 points on his own. Lando Norris managed only P4 for 12 points. Oscar Piastri came home P7 for 6. Austin changes almost nothing about that trajectory. Verstappen has four race wins at COTA from his last five visits, and the Red Bull Ford Powertrains package has clicked into form in a way that nobody in the paddock quite predicted after the mid-season slump.
McLaren’s response is a circuit-specific low-drag rear wing and reprofiled floor edges aimed at the 1.2 km back straight. The question is whether a geometry change on one race weekend can neutralise a car that has found several tenths across the broader package. If it cannot, third place in the Constructors’ may change hands on Sunday night.

Friday practice: what to watch
The compressed timings of Singapore are gone. Austin brings three full practice sessions and 180 minutes of track preparation. For engineering teams, that is the operational bandwidth to run back-to-back correlation trials, conduct flow-visualisation aerodynamic sweeps and dial in baseline mechanical balance without any Sprint-related parc fermé constraints.
Four Friday indicators matter most. First, ride-height dynamics over the Sector 1 bumps: cars that ride the crests cleanly without sudden bottoming will extract consistent lap time. Second, aero correlation checks for both Ferrari and Mercedes, which will run aero rakes and flow-vis paint on their updated packages. Third, long-run degradation on the medium tyre, specifically whether Ferrari’s wider operating window prevents the thermal collapse that hurt them on softs at Singapore. Fourth, the sector-split breakdown itself: S1 for front-end stability, S2 for straight-line efficiency and S3 for low-speed mechanical traction.
What this weekend decides
If Antonelli converts, Austin becomes the weekend the youngest champion in Formula 1 history was crowned. If he does not, the title fight travels to Mexico with the same mathematics intact and the same core question unanswered. Either way, Ferrari’s upgrade result shapes the entire narrative of the final five rounds and the opening months of 2027. If Red Bull keep their Sepang-and-Singapore form going, McLaren slip to fourth in the Constructors’. The weekend reads light on paper and heavy on consequence.
